Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Monday, 15th June, 2015, approved the dissolution of all boards of parastatals and agencies of government in the state. One notable officer affected is the Lagos State’s Chief Accountant and Permanent Secretary, State Treasury Office, Mr. David Sunmomi. The manner of his alleged suspension set tongues wagging as a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Aruna Habib, just announced the appointment of Mrs. Abimbola Shukrat Umar as his replacement and was silent on the fate of the former accountant general.
Sources in Alausa secretariat of the Lagos State government told National Infinity that Mr. Sunmomi was relieved of his appointment because there were reports linking him to the governorship ambition of Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, whose campaign he was said to have made heavy financial commitment while another sources claimed that about a week to the inauguration of Ambode as governor, the former AG was said to have paid out a huge sum of money amounting to over N2bn based on approval by the outgoing governor. Efforts to confirm the story from the State Treasury Office proved abortive as workers kept sealed lips over the issue.
The new Accountant General and Permanent Secretary, State Treasury Office, Mrs. Umar, prior to her new appointment, was the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
A holder of the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Economics (1983) from the University of Ibadan and Masters of Science in Corporate Governance (2013) from Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds United Kingdom, Mrs Umar is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) and Nigeria Economic Society respectively.
She worked for over 15 years in the private sector, particularly with the renowned KPMG International before joining the Lagos State Civil Service as Chief Accountant in 2002.
